Ceremonial Opening

On Wednesday, 30 May 2012, in the presence of ambassadors and political and cultural figures of the Czech Republic, the Lidice Gallery in Lidice hosted the ceremonial opening of the 40TH INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S EXHIBITION OF FINE ARTS LIDICE 2012.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Culture PhDr. Anna Matoušková, Head of MFA Public Diplomacy Department Jan Bondy, Head of UNESCO Division of the Ministry of Culture Michal Beneš, Chairwoman of the Czech Commission for UNESCO Prof. RNDr. Helena Illnerová, DrSc, Senator Jiří Dientsbier and Mayor of the Town of Kladno Dan Jiránek. From among the diplomatic missions of participating countries, there were present the ambassadors of Cuba, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Turkey and Venezuela and representatives of the embassies of Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, the Philippines, Iran, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Rumania, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine and U.S.A.

From the very morning children could enjoy an accompanying programme – artistic workshops where they were able to make puppets for themselves, the putting up of the mosaic LOUKAMOSAIC, a special workshop on “cyanotype” organized by IQ park Liberec and entertaining plays prepared by the Leisure-time Centre Labyrint Kladno. Shortly after 10 a.m. the programme was enlivened with a concert of two young singers Tereza Vágnerová and Šárka Domišincová who sang pieces from the musical Les Misérables.

At 11 a.m. the children’s choir from the Japanese School in Prague opened with three pieces the award ceremony on the stage in the garden of the Lidice Gallery, which was followed by the opening note to the 40th edition of the exhibition by the curator of the exhibition Ivona Kasalická; who, having welcomed all the present guests, mentioned the record number of entries and participating countries and congratulated the children who were awarded the first prize, the ‘Rose of Lidice’ medal. Afterwards, JUDr. Milouš Červencl, the director of the Lidice Memorial, summed up the 40th ICEFA in a short report and gave the floor to Deputy Minister of Culture Anna Matoušková to deliver the opening speech. Then Head of MFA Public Diplomacy Department Jan Bondy and Senator Jiří Dientsbier joined the Deputy Minister in giving the prizes to 61 laureates from Czech schools – ‘Rose of Lidice’ medals and certificates as well as material gifts, e.g. mugs with a photo of winning picture by each of the laureates, books donated by Euromedia Group, Lego sets, sets of crayons with a logo of the exhibition, free tickets to IQ Park Liberec and Aquapark Babylon and for older children also USB flash memories. An interesting present for every laureate surely was their own winning picture made into a cardboard jigsaw donated by Atlas company.

From among the foreign laureates there were Elíza Daine and Asnaté Berzina coming in person from Riga Juglas Vidusskola school in Riga, Latvia. They received their prizes from Chairwoman of the Czech Commission for UNESCO Helena Illnerová, Head of UNESCO Division of the Ministry of Culture Michal Beneš, Chairman of ICEFA 2012 Panel of Judges Pavel Rajdl and Representative of the Latvian Embassy Jánis Kalva. The event saw another foreign laureate, Toprak Erdem Aygun from the school Samsun Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi in Turkey. The top prize of the competition is the Prize of the Panel of Judges. This year the panel of judges unanimously agreed to award the prize to the school Kocaeli Bahcesehir Koleji from Turkey. This school surprised with a collection of first-rate entries – drawings and paintings. Nine child winners as well as pedagogues and art teachers from this school came to Lidice to receive their many prizes. The crystal palette was handed over to headmaster Mahmut Kalci by Mrs. Helena Illnerová, Mr. Michal Beneš, Chairman of the Panel of Judges Pavel Rajdl and Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey H.E. Cihad Erginay.

After the award ceremony ended, all guests were invited to the opening of and a tour through the exhibition installed in the 2nd floor the Lidice Gallery. After a short fanfare by children from the Japanese School in Prague and the cutting of the ribbon (by Anna Matoušková, Helena Ilnerová and Marie Šupíková, who had survived the Lidice tragedy as a child), more than 600 visitors could view more than 1,400 pictures and sculpted objects by children from various corners of the world.

The end of the event was marked by refreshments in the restaurant Lidice Gallery and the performance Zlatovláska by Dell’arte theatrical troupe from České Budějovice. Thanks to good weather and the success of the programme, the opening turned out well again this year.

Lidice will host the exhibition till 31st October 2012, then Riga in Latvia will follow in November 2012 and Vilnius in Lithuania in December 2012. After the international guesting, the reduced collection of entries will be on display at other places of the Czech Republic – e.g. at the Gallery of PAS Most. In the course of 2012, the children’s pictures will be displayed also in other places of the world – in Havana (Cuba), Oslo (Norway), Kabul (Afghanistan). Buenos Aires (Argentina), Skopje (Macedonia), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Budapest (Hungary), Stoke-on-Trent (United Kingdom), in the European Parliament and at the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to EU in Brussels (Belgium).
