ICEFA 2009 prize awards - Canada, Ottawa

9. 12. 2009

Three young students of the Dundas Valley School of Art at Hamilton, Ontario, gained success in the 37th international fine arts competition Lidice 2009, which is announced annually by the Lidice Memorial under the auspices of the Minister of Culture, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Education of the CR.

Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Canada Mr. Karel Žebrakovský met personally the winners – Zachary Konialian, Zachary Laurat and Marina Tesker – and their parents and teachers during his visit to Hamilton on 12 November 2009. The winners received certificates of the international competition Lidice 2009 and gifts from the Czech embassy as well as invitations to participate in the next edition of the competition. The awards took place in a very warm and pleasant atmosphere, because this school is a small one and the visit of an ambassador is a big event.

Coincidentally, Eva Kubíková was among the guests, an eyewitness and survivor of the Lidice tragedy who later fetched up in Canada where she worked as an ophthalmologist. Mrs. Kubíková is one of 17 Lidice children who survived the Lidice tragedy (out of 105 ones), and was the first Lidice child found. She returned to Lidice as early as May 1945.
