ICEFA 2009 Prize Awards – Syria, Damascus - Homs

On 22 April the premises of the Syrian Greek catholic archdiocese and church in Homs hosted ceremonial prize awards to the children who had won prizes in the 37th ICEFA Lidice 2009. As has become a tradition, the festive event enjoyed significant support of one of the most prominent spiritual leaders of Syria, Archbishop Isidor Battikha.
Opening the ceremony, Ambassador T. Uličný welcomed a large audience including many lady members of the Czech compatriot association in Homs. He thanked Mrs. Marie Sibai for supporting the development of the artistic talent in the youngest generation as well as the children for their participation in the competition. The Ambassador also appreciated social activities of the local compatriot association in supporting and developing Czech cultural awareness in Homs. In his speech, Archbishop Battikha appreciated the support the Ambassador extended during his four years in Syria to the Czech community in Homs, to the development of the dialogue of the churches in Syria and to the charitable activities performed in co-operation with the Greek catholic church.
Then the announcement of the results of the competition followed. The five best pictures were awarded honourable mentions of the panel of judges, with their creators receiving honourable certificates from the Ambassador and the Archbishop. All participants in the competition were presented with small gifts from the diplomatic mission.
After the awards a concert took place by students of the Music Department at the State University in Homs, who presented some pieces of contemporary Arab classical music. The event concluded with a social gathering organized by the archbishopric.
