ICEFA 2011 Prize Awards – China, Hong Kong

On 27 June and 11 July 2011, the Czech Consulate-General in Hong Kong saw Consul-General Jaroslav Kantůrek presenting eight “Rose of Lidice” medals and ten honourable mentions to pupils of nine Hong Kong art schools, whose entries on the theme “that is where I live” were awarded in the 39th International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts (ICEFA) Lidice 2011.
The children accompanied by their parents and teachers received some keepsakes and materials about the Czech Republic. In his opening speech, the Consul-General mentioned the tragic historical event that took place in Lidice in 1942 as well as the rich tradition of the international art competition. Additionally, the representatives of the schools were invited to support participation of their pupils in the following edition, for which the theme “Theatre – puppet – fairytale“ was chosen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jiří Trnka.
This year’s prize awards were attended also by the twelve children who had received their medals in person at the official ceremonial opening of the exhibition at the Lidice Memorial on 1 June 2011. These were pupils of the art school Simply Art, which had been also awarded the Prize of the Panel of Judges and a medal for its collection of works. Back then the prizes were presented to them by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Czech Republic Mr. Yu Qingtai, on whose invitation the children later visited the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China besides taking part in the rich accompanying programme prepared by the Lidice Gallery.
This year’s edition was extraordinary also due to as many as 48 Hong Kong schools sending in artworks by their pupils. This multiple growth is attributable to the massive promotion of ICEFA Lidice in Hong Kong earlier this year when Mrs. Ivona Kasalická, ICEFA Curator, talked with representatives of the Hong Kong Ministry of Education who consequently distributed the information about the competition and the invitations to participate through the network of schools.
