ICEFA 2011 Prize Awards – Croatia, Zagreb

On 24 November 2011, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Zagreb in co-operation with the School Museum in Zagreb organized formal awards of certificates and medals to children from Croatian school who had sent their artworks on the theme “This is where I live, that’s me” to the International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice. As has become a tradition, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Croatia had engaged in organizing the event. The 39th edition had seventy Croatian schools in total, with twenty of their pupils being awarded a prize.
The event is held annually by the Lidice Memorial to commemorate the victims of the Lidice tragedy. The aim of the exhibition is to arouse the interest of the youngest generation in modern history, namely in the events related to WWII.
Besides the winners, also representatives of the schools, teachers and pedagogues as well as the parents attended the prize award ceremony.
The award ceremony was opened by Curator of the School Museum Kristina Gverič while Director of the museum Branka Manin gave a warm welcome to the guests. Ambassador of the Czech Republic Karel Kühnl then congratulated the creators of the winning entries, presenting them with certificates and medals.
The ceremony was followed by a snack, at which the director of the School Museum in Zagreb gave small presents to the children and joined Ambassador Karel Kühnl in talking with them about the Czech village of Lidice and their winning works. The Ambassador stressed the importance of keeping the memories of the horrors of WWII so that they could not be repeated in the future.
Both the children and the representatives of the schools promised their participation in the 40th edition of this international competition next year.
The event in the School Museum was watched by some journalists from Croatian national dailies (Jutarnji list, Novi list, HTV, Hina…), who later reported on it.
