Hong Kong, Harbour City - 6. - 16. 1. 2011

18. 1. 2011

On 6 –16 January 2011 the shopping mall Harbour City in Hong Kong saw an exhibition of drawings by the youngest medallist of the 38th ICEFA Lidice, Kenny Kin Gi Lau. The event was accompanied by a launch of his animal picture book containing also the picture that had won the award at Lidice.
The organizer of the exhibition and the parents of the little Kenny asked the Lidice Memorial to provide the original copy of Kenny’s picture of a tiger and other award-winning entries from recent ICEFA editions as well as details on the history of Lidice.

An invitation to the opening of the exhibition on 6 January 2011 was delivered also to the curator of ICEFA Lidice. The exhibition featured 10 drawings by the little artist, 41 entries of ICEFA 2001–2010 from 22 countries and 5 banners about the history of the village of Lidice in English language. The exhibition space was dominated by the main panel consisting of 38 ICEFA Lidice posters, demonstrating the whole extent and the history of the ICEFA Lidice exhibition.

The exhibition was opened with a short conversation with the young artist Kin Gi, followed by speeches by ICEFA Lidice curator Ivona Kasalická and Consul General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong, Mr. Jaroslav Kantůrek. Then Kin Gi Lau handed over a cheque for 383,000 HK$ to the representative of the Ocean Park to be used for protection of abandoned animals while the representative of Ling Kee Publishing Co., Ltd. presented Ivona Kasalická with a special copy of the book in thanks for initiating the creation of the book – indeed, it was the theme of the 38th ICEFA, Biodiversity, what made Kenny draw the tiger. The event concluded with Kenny and the curator’s daughters painting a special greeting card that is usually presented on Chinese New Year’s Day. The three wrote a Chinese greeting in calligraphic characters under the drawings of a fish, a dragon and a horse, which was much appreciated by the present journalists and guests. Beside the guests, there were many journalists present who spoke not only with Kenny but also with the ICEFA curator. Next day, the ceremonial opening was covered in all major papers in Hong Kong.

Another event that promoted the exhibition significantly was the art workshop and Kenny’s book signing event that took place on the exhibition premises on 9 January. The art workshop was participated in by dozens of children and their parents. They painted a rabbit, a symbol of the new Chinese year beginning in February. Afterwards Kenny Kin Gi Lau and curator Ivona Kasalická set about signing the book by Kenny that received much interest.
