The exhibition of children’s works of art, Lidice 2010, was presented in the capital of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, Ebíl, in the late September. On 23 September a ceremonial opening of the exhibition took place in the presence of the CDA of the Embassy in Baghdad and, for the Iraqi party, the vice-governor of the city of Erbíl as well as other major figures of the political and cultural life, Also present were representatives of diplomatic missions (consulates) in Erbíl. The event was attended by dozens of primary school pupils as well. The exbiition was set up in the gallery of the central park Shanadir with public access, where it stayed for two days.
In his opening speech, the CDA of the Embassy in Baghdad mentioned the grounds for the constitution of the children’s art competition. Those circumstances were familiar to the local audience because Kurds have a historical experience similar to that of the Czech village of Lidice. The Kurdish town of Halabdja was bombed with chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein’s army in 1988, which brought death to several hundreds of people including children. This historical connection was mentioned in most of the media coverage of the exhibition. Attractive to the visitors was also the opportunity to see works by children from various exotic countries. They showed a keen interest to know about the possibilities to participate in the competition.
Owing to a great interest of the institutions of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan to make themselves visible, the exhibition enjoyed much attention, including the media coverage. Information on the exhibition was presented in most of the local media including TV visual news.
