ICEFA 2010 prize awards - Latvia, Riga

6. 12. 2010

On 1 December 2010 the Embassy in Riga organized a prize award ceremony in the conference room of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia with Ambassador Tomáš Pštross presenting Latvian laureates with 48 certificates and 11 medals from the 38th ICEFA Lidice 2010. The awards took place in the presence of representatives of Latvian partner institutions. The ceremony concluded with showing the fairytale movie Princess Jasnenka and the Flying Shoemaker by Zdeněk Troška.

As many as 578 Latvian children took part in this year’s edition of the competition. Entries by more than 200 participants had been selected in a local sub-competition having about 1,500 entries, the rest was sent by individual schools directly to the organizers of the exhibition. Before being sent to the competition the entries were exhibited in the foyer of the Riga city hall together with the exhibition “Responses to the Lidice Tragedy” prepared by the Lidice Memorial. The creators of these selected entries received honourable mentions from the Riga Council and the State Education Centre in the conference room of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia. For the third time, the Embassy in Riga awarded the Sympathy Prize to seven children (we were pleased that out of them three later received Lidice certificates and two others got medals). Receiving 59 prizes (pupils of 18 regional schools and 11 schools and hobby centres of Riga), Latvia came to be on the third rung of the imaginary ladder of success – in terms of the number of received prizes – from among 59 countries of the world this year.

With regard to the theme of the 38th edition and the venue of the Latvian sub-competition we opted again for the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia as a venue of the award ceremony. (By the way, the Minister together with the Ambassador opened the exhibition “Veronika Richterová –Tribute to PET Bottles” in the Latvian Museum of Nature in last year’s September.) The ceremony was opened with the children, their parents and their artistic leaders being addressed by Deputy Minister of the Environment A. Eglájs, Ambassador Tomáš Pštross and the representatives of the partner institutions, Deputy Director of the State Education Centre A. Bérziňa and Secretary-General of the Latvian Commission for UNESCO D. Baltiňa. Then the Ambassador presented the children with prizes and gifts prepared by the Embassy in Riga – Czech books translated into Latvian (small children received Nursery Rhymes by Josef Lada and recently published Fairytales by Jan Drda while the pupils of the second stage got Once Upon a Time…, or Mathematical Fairytales by M. Veselý and the oldest children received New Icarus by K. Biebel) and other small keepsakes and information materials about the Czech Republic. Enjoying a small meal, children competed for other keepsakes and afterwards the event concluded with showing the fairytale “Princess Jasnenka and the Flying Shoemaker” by Zdeněk Troška.

Displaying the exhibition “Responses to the Lidice Tragedy”, we succeeded this year in raising interest in ICEFA Lidice as well as awareness about the village of Lidice in the Latvian capital Riga and in the selected regional towns (Rézekne, Audrini, Malta, Tukums, Baldone). For the next year the Embassy in Riga plans to present the exhibition “Czech UNESCO Heritage” (one of the sub-themes of the next edition) along the exhibition of selected entries of the Latvian sub-competition, which will take place again the Riga city hall. We talked with our partners about the possibility to organize an exhibition of all awarded ICEFA entries in 2012, on the occasion of the 40th ICEFA Lidice (in 2002, the largest hobby centre Skolénu pils hosted the exhibition of the 30th edition).
