ICEFA Lidice 2010 Sub-Competition Prize Award at the Embassy in Riga, Latvia

11. 4. 2010

On the 5th March the conference room of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia saw prizes being awarded to 180 laureates of the Latvian ICEFA Lidice 2010 Sub-Competition, whose entries had been selected by the expert panel of judges. At this annual ceremony, Latvian institutions reward children for their representing Latvia in the competition. The Embassy in Riga awarded Sympathy Prize for the third time, this time to seven artists.

Every year this ceremony becomes a climax of the Latvian sub competition of the Lidice exhibition, which received more than 1,400 entries from Latvia, and marks the end of the exhibition of the selected entries – more than 180 of them has been selected this year to be shown to the Latvian public. For the second year running the foyer of the Riga city hall hosted the exhibition for three weeks, this time together with our exhibition Responses to the Lidice Tragedy (see KZ 101/2010-RIGA).

As this year’s theme has been Biodiversity of My Country, the main guarantor of this Latvian sub competition, the State Centre for Education at the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, chose the premises of the Ministry of the Environment to host the prize award ceremony. (Let us remember that last year, when the competition bore the theme of the universe, the children could listen to an interesting lecture at the ceremony about intriguing aspects of the universe by the president of the Latvian Astronomy Association.) The secretary of state at the Ministry gave the opening speech and the staff of the department of environmental protection prepared a small knowledge quiz on the Latvian nature as well as gifts for the winners. Then, having addressed the audience, Ambassador T. Pštross presented Sympathy Prize of the Embassy and books about the Czech Republic to seven Latvian children. Sympathy Prizes followed from Riga Museum of Natural History as well as speeches by our partners. The State Centre for Education then presented the children with gifts bearing the lettering LIDICE 2010. The preparedness of this year’s ceremony as well as the number of the guests present – the auditorium was filled to capacity with children, parents and teachers – once again confirmed that the organizers take the competition very seriously.

As the main competition has been receiving very interesting entries from Latvia, we believe we will meet many young artists at the prize award ceremony at Lidice. Having a great esteem for their child representation, the Latvian party did not omit emphasizing that the last year’s 64 prizes for Latvian children ranked Latvia among the top contestants as to the number of prizes received.
