ICEFA 2008 prize awards - Croatia, Zagreb

On 4 Feb 2009 ceremonial awards of certificates and medals to participants from Croatia in the 36th International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice took place in the residence of the ambassador of the Czech Republic in Zagreb.
The event commemorating child victims from the Czech village of Lidice is organized annually by the Lidice Memorial. The aim of the exhibition is to arouse interest of the youngest generation in modern history, especially in the events of the WWII.
As has become a tradition, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Croatia got involved in organizing the event. Forty-seven Croatian schools entered the 36th edition, ten of them being awarded. The themes for this year’s edition were POTATOES and WORLD LANGUAGES. While held in the building of “Croatian school museum” in the past years, the prize awards were organized exclusively by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Croatia this year for the first time. The occasion was attended by children from all parts of Croatia, often from places more than 300 km far. Along with the children also representatives of the schools – headmasters and teachers – visited the Ambassador’s residence.
After the ceremony the Ambassador Karel Kühnl presented children with small gifts and talked with them about the war at Czech village of Lidice. The Ambassador stressed how important is to keep memories of horrors of WWII if they are not to be repeated in the future. The children and the representatives of the schools promised their participation in the 37th edition of this interesting competition.
Also a number of journalists from Croatian national dailies (Jutarnji list, Novi list…) visited the residence and the Ambassador Karel Kühnl gave interview for the HTV1 channel programme Prizma. In total, some 45 persons attended the ceremony. Also Croatian press agency (HINA) and other media informed about the event.
