ICEFA Lidice 2011 Sub-Competition Prize Awards - Latvia, Riga

On 4 March 2011 the White Hall of the Latvian Society House held ceremonial prize awards to 155 laureates of the Latvian ICEFA Lidice 2011 sub-competition whose works had been selected by the expert panel of judges. This is a regular occasion for Latvian institutions to reward the children for their representing Latvia in the competition itself. It is the fourth time the Embassy in Riga has awarded the Sympathy Prize, to ten participants this time.
The ceremony is the annual climax of the Latvian sub-competition, which the creators of the selected works are invited to attend. This year the panel of judges selected 155 out of 1,300 entries. (N.B. Apart from these selected entries there are many other schools that send in their entries directly to Lidice, without taking part in the Latvian sub-competition.) The purpose of this event is to show the pupils and their teachers our appreciation for their good work that will represent Latvia in this international competition. Furthermore, it is the third time the entries by these children can be seen by the Latvian public in the foyer of Riga city hall, this time together with our exhibition “Czech UNESCO Heritage”.
The opening part of the ceremony saw representatives of the Latvian institutions appearing that take part in preparation and promotion of the competition in Latvia. It is the Government Centre for Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia and the department of education, sports and youth of the Riga municipality. For the Czech part, Ambassador T. Pštross gave an opening speech and presented ten Latvian children with Sympathy Prizes of the Embassy along with some books and other keepsakes.
The entries by Latvian children are of top quality, which is why we believe that also this year Latvia will win many awards in the global competition.
