ICEFA 2015 Prize Awards - Latvia, Riga

On 4 November 2015, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Latvia organized a prize-giving ceremony in the ceremonial room of the Riga City Hall to celebrate the winners of the 43rd International Children's Exhibition of Fine Arts (ICEFA) Lidice 2015. Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Latvia Miroslav Kosek presented the most successful young artists with certificates and "Rose of Lidice" Medals.
ICEFA is a major international competition, one of the largest and oldest competitions of children's artistic expressions, in which Latvian children traditionally achieve the top places in the rankings. In their works, school and pre-school children addressed the theme "Light", which had been recommended for this year's edition by the Czech Commission for UNESCO.
With the assistance of the Czech Embassy, Latvian schools and youth centres sent in 502 paintings, drawings, prints and pieces of ceramic and mixed media items, from which the expert panel chose the best ones to be awarded with 43 honourable mentions and 6 "Rose of Lidice" medals for schools and individuals.
Ambassador Miroslav Kosek opened the festive afternoon event with a speech in Latvian language, welcoming all the present and appreciating the success of the young artists. The winners, their teachers and their parents were addressed by Agra Bērziņa and Areta Raudzepa from the National Educational Centre of the Latvian Ministry of Education. The afternoon ended with the showing of the Czech film Anděl Páně / Lord's Angel by Jiří Strach based on the fairy tale by Božena Němcová. The film was translated into Latvian and simultaneously dubbed by Halina Lapiņa.
Children's joy over the prizes and thanks from teachers for the inspiring project are an unequivocal sign of Latvian interest in participating in the ICEFA in the years to come.
