ICEFA 2014 Latvian Sub-Competition Prize Awards - Latvia, Riga

14. 3. 2014

Latvian participation in the International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice (ICEFA) is a longstanding, highly participated tradition and to date very successful. Thanks to the good promotion of the project around the country, there is not a single Latvian district where at least one school or art workshop does not take part. Each year young artists 4 to 16 years old create thousands of works, using their fantasy and skills in the memory of  the Lidice children to produce a 2D or 3D artifact on a given topic. The organizers dedicated the 2014 ICEFA edition to the theme "Family Farming, or Our Garden and Field" by the organizers.

In 2014 the Latvian jury for the national ICEFA sub-competition received 1334 works from 67 educational institutions and workshops. Out of these, 196 works were selected to be sent to Lidice. These select works were then presented to the public as a nicely arranged exposition on the premises of the Riga City Hall from February 5th through 20th, 2014.

Due to the competition’s theme of farming, the official announcement of the winners consequently took place at the Ministry of Agriculture in Riga on February 20th, 2014. Over 250 guests, mostly the young artists, their parents and teachers, visited the ceremony, during which were awarded The Prize of the Ministry of Agriculture, Prize of the City Council as well as the Prize of the Czech Ambassador in Latvia. The Deputy Chief of the Mission J. Smyček handed out diplomas signed by the Czech Ambassador P. Šepeľák to authors of 18 works.

A performance by a children theater group from Riga and animated clips of young film makers followed in the afternoon program. Appreciation to the Czech Embassy in Riga for its active involvement in the project was several times expressed by the Latvian organizers. At the end of February the Embassy will transport the selected works from the Latvian sub-competition to Lidice at its own expense, and in the fall will organize a ceremony for those Latvian participants who succeed in the 42nd running of ICEFA Lidice. The Embassy sees  partnering in this project as valuable due to its positive impact on the development of young Latvians‘ artistic talent and for their awareness of the Czech Republic.
